Stage management…?

an explanation

Stage Managers do not exist in traditional German theatre. They came into existence with the rise of big commercial productions, like 'Cats' in the 80's.

Very often they are confused with what in German theatre, opera etc. is called the "Inspizient" who is the person on the book. As producing the book and being on the book is pretty much all the German "Inspizient" does (and quite brilliantly so, I dare say), I have given the German reader who is not familiar with the job of stage managing an overview of the job in scene03.

It is one of my pet hates being asked to "inspizieren" some show or another and I have a CD ready that I play should someone ask me how and if I learnt to stage manage. "Inspizienten", one should maybe add, are never trained in Germany but usually come from some other job within the theatre; on- or offstage.

You, as the English speaking reader are, I assume, familiar with stage managers, production stage managers etc. and will not need such an explanation. Should the need arise, please feel free to contact me:
